Happy Earth Day! The tumultuous start to this year has made us especially aware that every living thing on this beautiful planet is deeply entwined and interconnected. From the bumblebee to the blue whale, we are part of a vast web of ecosystems, and we must support each other to maintain balance.
At ZENTS, we believe that our role in maintaining that balance is to ensure that we do not harm other creatures. When we set out to develop luxe vegan, and cruelty free skin care products, we found a few common ingredients that, while seemingly innocent, actually disrupt life for other species.
Are you really using 100% cruelty free skin care in your beauty regimen? You might be surprised. Here are some sneaky ingredients to watch for:
Beeswax is a byproduct from the creation of honey. Bees secrete the wax and use it to help create their beautiful honeycomb beehives. The wax serves as an incubator for bee larvae, making it essential for the survival of the colony.
As part of their natural process, bee colonies do not create a surplus of the wax. This means that whatever beeswax is taken from a bee colony reduces their ability to nurture their young. Because it is animal-derived, beeswax is not a suitable ingredient for vegan skin care.
Thankfully, Mother Earth offers sustainable, cruelty free skin care alternatives. Instead of beeswax, look for products that contain cruelty-free ingredients like candelilla wax. Candelilla wax is a natural emollient and skin protector, making it the perfect ingredient for our reparative Concreta balm.
Palm oil has become a common ingredient in skin care products. While not directly animal-derived, the process of growing and harvesting palm oil in rainforests has become harmful to the animals who live there.
To make way for lucrative palm oil plantations, tropical areas like Malaysia and Indonesia are being rapidly deforested, threatening thousands of species—some of whom are already on the brink of extinction.
Fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers exist in the wild today as a result of rapid deforestation. Slash-and-burn methods of forest clearing often trap orangutans in their treetop homes, where they are unable to escape. Pygmy elephants and sun bears are a few more examples of creatures whose numbers are dwindling as rainforests disappear.
Fortunately, there are many natural and organic alternatives to palm oil that are kind to animals and supportive of their habitats. Our nourishing Body Oil imparts a light and lustrous sheen using sustainable, antioxidant-rich safflower and sunflower oils.
Many of us hear the term “musk” a lot without knowing what it really is. With its lavish, sweet and deep scent, you may be surprised to learn that this ingredient comes from animals. Sadly, musk deer, civet cats, and beavers are animals commonly mistreated or killed to harvest musk.
ZENTS fragrances use clean ingredients like cruelty-free musk dupes and rich botanicals to add depth and luxury to our scents. When you select a sumptuous Attar or Eau de Toilette in your favorite aroma, you can be assured that no animals were harmed in the making of your signature fragrance.
With abundant alternatives to animal-derived ingredients, there’s no need to use body care products that don’t align with your values. Each ZENTS product was created with intentions of love and healing, for you and for our planet. Our hope is that you experience kindness and connectedness each time you use ZENTS in your body care regimen 💛
